African Club Championships 2011

Al Ahly book FIVB Men’s World Club Championship spot with 10th African crown

Al Ahly of Egypt captured their second consecutive and 10th in total men’s African Club Championship title after defeating Prisons of Kenya in straight sets 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-10) in the final at Al Ahly club hall in Cairo, Egypt on Saturday to book a place in the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship for a second successive year.

El Guish of Egypt secured the bronze medal after they cruised past University of Rwanda 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-14).

Al Ahly represented the continent in last year’s edition of the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship in Doha, Qatar and will be aiming to improve on their fifth place finish in October.

Al Ahly also ended their Prisons’ dream of being the first club ever to qualify for the FIVB Club World Championships in both genders after their female counterparts qualified last month after they were crowned African women’s champions, but the silver medal will stand as the best ever finish for a Kenyan club in the history of the competition.

An impressive crowd of 4,000 watched Al Ahly claim their 10th African title since 1982.
