Ukraine needs dramatic golden set to advance to semis in Illichivsk

CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup

Illichivsk, Ukraine, June 23, 2011. Although Germany did not
travel to Illichivsk with its top teams – like for instance Julius Brink
and Jonas Reckermann who recently claimed bronze at the SWATCH FIVB
World Championships in Rome – this nation remains a major force to
contend with for the Zonal Phase tournament of the CEV Beach Volleyball
Continental Cup that got started this afternoon.
Markus Böckermann/Mischa Urbatzka and Thomas Kaczmarek/Alexander
Walkenhorst – who this past Sunday had topped the final standings of the
CEV Satellite in Lausanne – swept three games in a row to easily edge
Sweden in the quarterfinals there in Illichivsk. Germany will play
Poland in the semis and it won’t be an easy task as top teams like
Fijalek/Prudel and Kadziola/Szalankiewicz are set to defend the honors
of the country that will be hosting the 2013 World Championships in
Stare Jablonki.
The second 1/4 final starring Greece and Ukraine was much more dramatic.
The hosts opened in great fashion with Ostapenko/Mykhaylov and
Babich/Ioisher defeating Kotsilianos/Zoupanis and Billiris/Xenakis in
straight sets to go for the provisional 2:0.
However, Greece stormed back to seize the next two matches where the
home guys mentored by Vasily Bukin could not find their best play.
The final outcome of this clash was to be determined at the “golden set”
where Ukraine opted for Mykola Babich and Oleksandr Ioisher to play
once again Greece’s best duo Kotsilianos/Zoupanis.
With the great support coming from the stands, Babich/Ioisher eventually
stamped the final 15-10 so that Ukraine finally advanced to the semis
to play there Estonia.
